Robert Descharnes has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
The present painting bears a striking iconographic resemblance to a group of paintings which Dalí executed in 1942 as his set designs for the ballet Romeo and Juliet, most specifically, the Romeo and Juliet Memorial (Descharnes and Néret, vol. I, no. 801; Private Collection). It is clearly related to this series of set designs, and may even be a study for the Romeo and Juliet Memorial. In both the present painting and the Memorial, a cloaked figure and a rider astride a horse appear on either side of a central arch, with only the scene beyond the arch differing.
