Lot Essay

This pastel is one of a group of studies for the painting Danseuses à la barre, executed 1884-1888 (Lemoisne, no. 807; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.). Here the model has posed nude for the figure of the dancer who appears in ballet costume in the foreground of the painting.
