Lot Essay

This drawing is related to the oil painting Bildnis Dr. Hugo Koller, 1918 (Kallir, no. 320; coll. Österreichische Galerie, Vienna), in which the sitter is holding an open book. Koller was an industrialist with a scholarly bent; in the portrait Schiele depicts him in his library surrounded by books. Koller was married to the painter Broncia Pinell, and Schiele was a frequent guest at their home in the summer of 1918.
