This drawing is related to the sculpture Homme assis à la guitare, 1918 (see A.G. Wilkinson, The Sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz: A Catalogue Raisonné, New York, 1966, no. 69). The artist wrote:
The guitar is used as a point of reference, a stabilizing influence around which the figure is organized and into which
it is integrated. The guitar, which is a man-made object,
normally remains relatively recognizable, while the figure
may be largely disintegrated. The existence of the guitar
assists in the visual recomposition of the figure into a new
and different kind of reality. (J. Lipchitz with H.A. Arnason, My Life in Sculpture, New York, 1972, p. 50)
