Executed in 1953, this sculpture is one of a number of individually painted ceramic owls which were cast from an original white earthernware maquette executed on December 25, 1949. An edition of six bronzes was also cast from the same model in 1950.
The theme of the owl held particular appeal for Picasso: he had once rescued and cared for an owl which had fallen from the beams of the Château Grimaldi in Antibes where he stayed during 1946.
