THE MARTIN VOIGT RELICS
The following twenty-six lots were collected by Martin Voigt (1878-1952), Postmaster to German New Guinea, and sent for sale by his heirs
Voigt was sent from his native Germany to New Guinea in 1902 to assume the position of Postmaster, which his predecessor, the first postmaster in the relatively new colony, had been forced to give up due to ill health. Voigt established himself at Herbertshoehe (now Kokopo), in present day New Britain, where the climate was relatively hospitable. His responsibilities extended over the entire colony of mainland New Guinea and surrounding islands and during his period of service he travelled extensively throughout the area. Voigt served in New Guinea for three and a half years before returning to Germany for health reasons. It is unusual to have such a comprehensive group of artefacts which have been kept for so long by the heirs.
