This type of mask was made in the coast region west of Wewak, in the low mountain inland regions and on the Schouten Islands. It was used in the barang ceremony in connection with yam harvests and to bring about success in the hunt. A cassowary headpiece and a shell headband across the forehead were originally attached, and boar's tusks were often placed in the nostrils.
