Meireles' work is associated with the Brazilian Neo-Concretist movement shaped by Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica. However, it responds to the socio-political conditions of Brazil under the dictatorships of the 1960's and the 1970's, a rich period for the emergence of new vanguard movements and extreme liberty of artistic expressions. His work is intentionally interactive, crossing the boundaries between the physical and the metaphysical, the concrete and the immaterial. Metros I belongs to a series, that like much of his work, intends to reinterpret the natural sense of time and history by subverting the order.
