John Sloan executed this work in 1917 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he spent many summers painting. According to the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work, this work is alternately titled Autumn Rocks and Leaves (Gloucester Thicket, Autumn) and Autumn Thicket.
