This painting was published as an illustration for Vingie E. Roe's story entitled "Smoky Face" that was featured in Collier's Weekly on June 9, 1917. It appeared with the caption: In ten seconds his gun was leveled in their gaping faces. 'Back!' he yelled, his blue eyes black like a maniac's; 'fall back!'
