Gardner, Washington," June 1863. 1 page, 203 x 250 mm. (8 x 9/7/8 in.) including paper mount, the mount foxed.A superb albumen print, taken by O'Sullivan, one of Gardner's most important associates. It depicts "Fighting Joe" Hooker, commander of the Army of the Potomac -- conspicuous in his flamboyant tall-crowned hat -- flanked by a large group of uniformed officers. The photo was taken at an unnamed Army of the Potomac encampment only a month after Hooker's ignominous defeat at Chancellorsville, thanks to the tactical brilliance of Robert E. Lee.
