LINCOLN ON BEHALF A YOUNG COLONEL, LATER KILLED AT FREDERICKSBURG

A lengthy letter recommending a military transfer for a young officer. Lincoln had been visited on behalf of the officer by his wife: "Mrs. Major Cross calls on me saying that you intimated that you would appoint her husband Inspector of the 8th Army corps with the rank of Lieut. Colonel if, in addition to papers already before you, a letter in favor of it could be obtained from Gen. Wool. She says the letter from Gen. Wool has been obtained and she thinks nothing is now needed but getting your attention to the subject. Please give a moments attention to it."

Major Charles E. Cross attended West Point and was commissioned 2nd Lt. of engineers in May 1861. He was appointed captain and brevetted major for gallant and meritorious service in McClellan's peninsula campaign and brevetted lieutenant colonel in September 1862 for gallant and meritorious service at Antietam. Mrs. Cross visited Lincoln the following month, eliciting this letter of support. Cross continued to win citations: he was promoted to full colonel nine months later for "gallant and meritorious service while assisting to throw a bridge across the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg in the face of the enemy where he was killed 5 June 1863." Not in Collected Works, ed. R.P. Basler, or Supplements.
