LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Autograph letter signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Washington, D.C., 4 December 1862. 1 page, 8vo, on Executive Mansion stationery.
"LET IT BE DONE": THE PRESIDENT ORDERS A FAVOR FOR AN INDIANA CONGRESSMAN
A very direct, forcefully phrased order from the President regarding an appointment sought on behalf of an Indiana man: "Sir: Hon. Mr. Mitchell of Indiana wants George F. Clark appointed as Additional Paymaster; and I wish to oblige him. Let it be done. Yours truly..." Not in Collected Works, published in Supplement 10:166.
William Mitchell (1807-1865) was an Indiana Republican, first elected to the House of Representatives in the 37th Congress, March 1861. Lincoln's reason for being so anxious to grant him the favor mentioned here is not known and there is no record of the appointment having been made, as ordered by the President.
