AN AILING PRESIDENT
Less than a year before his untimely death in office, Taylor pleads ill health in declining an invitation to a scientific exposition. The American Institute of the City of New York, founded in 1828, held an annual science fair: "I regret that circumstances connected with public duties and the state of my health will not allow me to avail myself of your kind invitation to attend the Annual Fair of the Institute in the City of New York. I would have afforded me the highest pleasure to witness the many valuable products of genius & of skill which your Society yearly brings together, and which its labors tend constantly to increase & distribute. It may & I trust will be in my power to attend some future exhibition."
Taylor's letters as President are rare.
