WASHINGTON DISCHARGES A DRUMMER

A discharge from the Continental Army granted to William Whitehead, Drummer in the Second New York Regiment, "having faithfully served...Six years and three Months." The discharge is dated the day before Washington's famous letter to the various States announcing his retirement since "the great object" [Independence] had been realized at last (although the final peace treaty had not yet been signed).
