JODE, GERARD DE (1509-91) and CORNELIS DE (1568-1600). Totius orbis cogniti universalis descriptio. Antwerp 1589 [i.e. 1593]. Engraved map of the world, single sheet, platemark 349 x 506, showing the world on a rectangular projection, engraved caption within decorative frame at top, flanked by two small inset hemispheres. (Slight wear at fold with minor loss at bottom.) Matted and framed (unexamined out of frame).
One of two world maps published in the second edition of the de Jodes' Speculum orbis terrae, published in 1593. The imprint at bottom states that the map was "made" by Cornelis de Jode in November 1589 at the Academy of Douai, and published or printed by his father Gerard de Jode. Publication of the map was delayed until the second edition of the atlas was ready, two years after Gerard's death. The de Jodes' attractive maps suffered from the competition of Ortelius's Theatrum, and very few copies of the atlas were sold, as is evident from the scarcity of both the complete atlas and single maps on the market. Shirley 165; Koeman Jod 2, no. 1.
