SHEPARD, E.H. "Christmas Greetings." Original ink drawing for a privately printed Christmas card for the artist. Circa 1940s. 269 x 191 mm. (10 5/8 x 7½ in.) overall size, on illustration board; matted (double-glazed) and framed. The drawing depicts three of Milne's most beloved characters bearing gifts through a snowy wooded landscape. Eeyore has a mouthful of holly, Pooh holds a honey-jar, and Piglet carries a Christmas cracker over is shoulder--perhaps Shepard's version of the three Magi bearing gifts. The caption reads "Christmas Greetings" across the top and "From Norah & Ernest Shepard" below the procession. On a marginal note in pencil Shepard has indicated the size of the block and cards for the printer, as well as the print run for the card "200 with envelopes." On the verso of the illustration board Shepard has typically written in ink his return address: "Return to: E.H. Shepard Long Meadow Longdown Guildford" (visible through window cut in back mat).
