AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE VOLUTE-KRATER
attributed to the painter of copenhagen 4223
circa 335 b.c.
The A-side with an ionic naiskos housing a standing nude youth, his right hand gesturing in conversation, a mantle over his left shoulder, leaning on a staff, with a wreath in his left hand, facing a boy mounted upon a horse, with a wreath in his right hand and the bridle in his left, fillets hanging above, to the left a seated nude youth with a wreath and a phiale and a draped woman with an oenochoe and a wreath, a phiale on the ground, to the right a seated woman with an alabastron atop a phiale and a standing nude youth with a wreath, the neck with two confronting winged, horned lion-griffins with protruding tongues in added red, with campanula flowers surmounted by palmettes between and flanking them, below the rim a band of rosettes, a band of bead-and-reel, and a band of laurel with a central rosette; the B-side with a stele tied with a ribbon, surmounted by a kantharos in added white, surrounded by two male and two female offering-bearers, the neck with a palmette complex, a band of wave below the rim above a band of laurel; mascaroons of Io on the volutes in white and yellow, swan heads on the shoulders with added white and yellow, a band of ovolo on the rim, tongues on the shoulders, palmette complexes below the handles, a band of meander below, details in added white, red, and yellow
