AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE VOLUTE-KRATER
attributed to the samarcande group, associated with the painter of the macinagrossa stand
circa 315 b.c.
The A-side with an ionic naiskos enclosing a three-tiered flowering plant, flanked by two winged nikai, on the neck a female head in three-quarter view amidst florals, a thin band of bead-and-reel, a band of tri-colored meander, and a band of key above; the B-side with a female head facing left wearing a sakkos, necklace, and earrings, on the neck a large palmette complex, a band of laurel and a band of bead-and-reel above; white and red painted masks on the volutes, a band of ovolo on the rim above a band of wave, four swan heads in relief on the shoulders, palmette complex below each handle, a band of meander with saltire squares below the scenes, details added in yellow and white
