Lot Essay

[WITH:] STEVENSON, R. L. Autograph manuscript, a leaf of St. Ives. 1 page, 4to, written in ink with several revisions, folded, laid in above copy. The page (foliated "93") corresponds to page 92 (the end of Chapter XII) of the printed book, though with many differences. St. Ives was left unfinished at Stevenson's death. The last six chapters (of the book's 36) were written by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch from an outline of the intended course of the novel supplied by Mrs. Isobel Strong, who had acted as her step-father's (RLS's) amanuensis.
