Lot Essay

The recognizable depiction of the signal station on Victoria Peak and Hong Kong Harbor below suggests this painting portrays the port of Hong Knog rather than Macao. As the Victorian Peak signal station was not erected until 1861, this view dates after that time. A similar view is illustrated in Carl L. Crossman The Decorative Arts of The China Trade (Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1991)p. 417, fig. 20.
