The screw steamship illustrated, MOHAWK, was built in Belfast Ireland by Harland & Wolff, and was owned by Elder, Dempster & Co.. Its homeport was London. This painting is the first example executed in oil. Only a sketch dated from 1892 which is located in the Mariner's Museum, Newport News, Virginia, is listed in Henry Sniffen Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp.205. Antonio Jacobsen painted three other vessels named MOHAWK of which all bore American flags. Two of the vessels were screw steamships and the other was a paddlewheel steamship.
