A PAINTED COMB-BACK WINDSOR ARMCHAIR
THOMAS COTTON HAYWARD, CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, 1770-1800
The crest with rounded ears and faceted lower edge above five spindles and arched back with two extra spindles all of which terminate below with swelled shafts centered by a rear rail with carved knuckle hand holds above ring and vase-turned arm supports over an incised and shaped plank seat, on ring and vase-turned legs with conical terminus, joined by swelled H-stretchers, stamped on underside, "T.C. HAYWARD" (evidence of green paint beneath the red)-- 46in. high, 28½in. wide (at arms), the seat 17in. deep
