DIAL SIGNED AND CASE LABELLED SIMON WILLARD, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1805

The arched molded hood with pierced fret centering three plinths surmounted by brass fluted ball-and-spire finials above a molded cornice over a conforming glazed cupboard door opening to a conforming white-painted dial with Roman and Arabic chapter rings enclosing a sweep seconds hand and calendar day aperture surmounted by a lunette embellished with a central flower encircled by a meandering vine flanked by a rose, the spandrels blue-painted and decorated with various flowers, the dial signed Simon Willard, flanked by stop-fluted columns with brass capitals and bases above a waisted case with a cockbeaded cupboard door embellished with fan-inlaid corners flanked by stop-fluted quarter columns with brass capitals and bases over a line-and-fan inlaid rectangular base, the interior case door with engraved label for Simon Willard, (lacking feet)--92¼in. high, 18½in. wide, 10in. deep

Lot Essay

Located on the inside of the cupboard door is a printed label by Joseph N. Russell of Boston for Simon Willard. Willard used this label between 1796 and 1798, while a later label printed by Isaiah Thomas, Jr., which was used after 1800. Affixed only to his tall-case clocks, printed labels both adveritsed Willard's timepieces and provided directions for operation.
