John Rutledge was a South Carolina born politician and a statesman. Having been educated in England, he returned to Charleston in 1761 to practice law. After just four years, at the young age of twenty six, he was elected to the First Congress in New York and ten years later was a member of the Second Congress in Philadelphia. After the war he became Governor of South Carolina and in 1795 was appointed Chief Justice.
