Flint commented on his use of antique paper, 'Many drawings of mine have been made on beautiful antique paper, old French, old Italian, old Dutch, Hungarian, Spanish, English and Irish. Colour, texture, 'feel' are subtler, more attractive, more simpatica, than in modern papers' (see W. Russell Flint, Drawings by Sir William Russell Flint, P.R.W.S., R.A., London, 1950, p. 28).
