Lot Essay

Hornel first visited Japan with his friend George Henry in 1893 on a painting tour funded by the Glasgow dealer Alexander Reid and by William Burrell, a patron of the arts. In 1920-21 he returned to Japan for nearly six months, this time with his sister, Tizzie. They visited Kobe, Tokyo and Yokahama but spent most of their time in Kyoto.
