Lot Essay

Painted after Redpath's visit to Portugal in 1961, Holy Family, Belem belongs to a series of church interiors which begin with paintings of the church at Cuenca in Spain in 1951 and culminate in paintings of Venetian churches in 1964. Although brought up as a strict Congregationalist she developed a passion for Catholic architecture and ornament. She would execute numerous sketches on location which formed the basis of large oils painted back in Edinburgh (see. P. Bourne, Anne Redpath 1895-1965, Her Life and Work, Edinburgh, 1989, p. 74).
