MAISON LEROY
The Guardian of Great Vintages is how Henri Leroy always describes his company, and his daughter Mme. Lalou Bize-Leroy has faithfully maintained the traditions. Superb reserve's of Burgundy's greatest vintages lie buried here, sometimes requiring 20 years or more to approach their peaks. 1972 was such a vintage, which in Burgundy gave far superior results to those from Bordeaux. A sunny September brought grapes from the best sites to ripeness, giving wines of excellent colour and sufficient flesh, with notable, bright acidity. The best reds have aged well, and now show their essential characters, being fully mature.
Of these four 1972 wines Madame Bize-Leroy finds Pommard-Epenots and Romanée-Saint-Vivant absolutely ready. "They have held on to their fruit, and the acidities are now less aggressive." Of Corton 1972 and Chambertin 1972 she says : "These can be kept, if in a good, humid cellar. Humidity is as important as temperature, when storing wine, it keeps the corks swollen." All these bottles have pristine labels, having been picked from the Leroy cellars and labelled specially for this sale. AH
