THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 1965
A dress worn by actress Julie Andrews as "Maria" in one of the most successful film musicals ever made. The Sound Of Music tells the story of an Austrian family in 1938, and the novice who becomes the children's governess. Beautifully filmed in the Austrian mountains and Salzburg, the film follows the experience of the von Trapp family who leaves their homeland to escape Nazi occupation. The dress was worn by Julie Andrews when she took the children on a day trip, and they sang the popular "Do-a-deer, a-female-deer, Ra-a-drop-of-golden-sun."
The sturdy, heavy brown homespun jumper, is constructed with a wheat colored blouse underneath an attached matching fabric jerkin. On the collar the sewn in studio tag 20th Century Fox; on the waist seam the sewn in studio tag 20th Century Fox. The dress is featured on the cover of the original RCA Victor soundtrack album; the studio, feeling that a brown dress would be too drab for an album cover, decided to portray the dress as pink.
