THE HOWDY DOODY SHOW
A costume worn by Buffalo Bob, circa 1950s on his television show. The blue suit was worn on the NBC network from early 1950 through Labor Day 1955. At that time, the network began televising The Howdy Doody Show in color; due to chroma-key (known as "blue screen") Mr. Smith could no longer wear this costume, and changed to a mustard colored suit with red and white trim.
The two piece Brooks Co. costume is constructed with tan suede fringe on both the shirt and matching trousers. The back of the shirt features a heavy quilted, brown leather and fabric "buffalo"; the costume belt is brown suede and "silver", decorated with over-sized "Lucky Nickel" buffalo five cent coins. Together with a handwritten letter on Mr. Smith's personal "Howdy" stationery telling the story of the blue suit. Accompanied by an inscribed and signed vintage color postcard of Buffalo Bob in the suit with "Howdy". (3)
