THE HOWDY DOODY SHOW
A "Howdy Doody" puppet; constructed in the image of Buffalo Bob's best friend, "Howdy" is dressed in the familiar red plaid shirt, faded jeans and red cowboy boots. Accessorized with two red and yellow armbands, brown belt and red neck bandana. Rear head strings cause the blue eyes to blink, and the mouth to open.
The original "Howdy Doody", which is in the possession of Mr. Smith, is a marionette or "stringed" puppet. It is extremely difficult for the original puppet to make personal appearances, film television specials and commercials and be photographed, without a decorated puppet stage, a puppet bridge from which a puppeteer could operate the marionette. According to Buffalo Bob, "We then made a "Howdy Doody" look-alike - no strings attached - who is flexible and mobile. As a result we call him "Photo Doody." A "Howdy Doody" used by Buffalo Bob is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. with fellow celebrity puppets Charlie McCarthy and Jock Mahoney. That puppet was used as a stand-in for lighting, etc. and is known as "Double Doody." Together with a handwritten letter on Buffalo Bob's personal stationery explaining "Photo Doody."
