1905 FORD MODEL F FOUR-PASSENGER SIDE-ENTRANCE TONNEAU
Engine No. F2705
Green with black fenders and khaki interior
Engine: Two-cylinder, 12hp; Gearbox: two-speed planetary; Brakes: rear drums; Suspension: full elliptical. Right hand drive.
In 1905, after only two years in business, the tremendously successful Ford Motor Company was forced to move to larger quarters. Production flourished and they decided to continue with a 1906 Model F which had been introduced in 1904. Many agree that the Model F is the ultimate two-cylinder Ford. It has what is considered the prettiest body with the most luxurious appointments of the day. There are very few still in existence.
The water-cooled, two-cylinder opposed engine was still positioned under the front seat with oil and water tanks under the front hood. This configuration was advertised as the latest in European styling. The automobile at 1,400 pounds, can develop a top speed of 30 to 35 mph. The company boasted that the materials used for fabrication were the finest available, but the efficient production facilities and quantity of output was such that the car could be offered at a price well below what it was actually worth. The standard equipment offered included two oil lamps, horn and necessary tools. Options available included top, windshield, headlights, and demountable rim wheels.
The Model F was considered a wonderful car for comfortable touring with a modest investment and ease of maintenance and repair, capable of taking all kinds of roads. As people's tastes changed and turned toward larger engines with more power, Ford went to a four-cylinder. The 1906 Model F would be the last of Ford's two-cylinder machines.
