Reasearch has suggested that a total of 42,738 Draped Bust dollars were struck in the last two weeks of October 1795. Only two die combinations were used; this one is believed to have produced 19,370 pieces. Over the years, collectors and researchers have also noticed that, of the tiny number of uncirculated specimens that survive, a handful display a distinct prooflike appearance and may represent presentation pieces. Proud of its new "draped bust" design, based on Gilbert Stuart's sketch of socialite Mrs. William Bingham (nee Ann Willing), the Philadelphia mint may have distributed these pieces to leading government officials during Washington's second term as President.
