The subject presented in this image is an unidentified two-masted topsail schooner, running downwind on a beam reach towards the southern end of Manhattan island. To the left of the image is Castle Garden, on the tip of Manhattan, and to the right is Castle William on Governor's Island. This setting, in upper New York Bay, is frequently depicted and must have been one of Buttersworth's favorite locales.
