This painting depicts several yachts rounding the Nore light ship at the Thames River estuary. The Nore was the prominent beacon that guided vessels into the freshwater of the Thames river and is here pictured as a turning mark in a racing scene. Buttersworth executed two known paintings of this interesting composition; the present example and another version Rounding the Nore, (Schaefer, no. 67), which was executed circa 1851.
