Lot Essay

Alboin Birks, the "capable successor" to Louis Solon as a master of the pàte-sur-âte technique, adapted the medium to dinner and dessert wares produced by Minton from circa 1900 into the 1930's. The pattern of the present decoration was introduced by Minton circa 1913. Tiffany & Co. was so impressed by the quality of these wares that they demanded Birks sign them 'A Birks' rather than with the more anonymous 'AB' monogram which her preferred.
