Lot Essay

This small model of an ostrich is one of a small number of Renaissance-style objects made by the House of Carl Fabergé. During his travels in western Europe Carl Fabergé became interested in Renaissance objets de vitrine, and in Germany, Italy and France became aware of the influences of historicism on 19th-century applied arts and the work of such craftsmen as Ratzendorfer and Vasters.

It is also interesting to compare the construction of this ostrich to a larger one in silver (see Christie's New York, 20 October 1999, lot 80) which is identical and executed by the same workmaster.
