Lot Essay

A typical scene by Russia's greatest seascape artist. Born in Feodosia in the Crimea of Armenian ancestry, Aivazovskii was a pensioner of the Academy of Arts and sent to western Europe to broaden his studies. Between 1840 and 1845, he lived and worked in Italy where he met J.M. Turner in 1842, who was so impressed by the younger artist's talent that he composed a poem in his praise.
