Each vase form, on spreading circular foot, the lower body fluted, the rim formed as a grapevine band with bacchanalian masks at intervals, with entwined serpent handles, the body applied with a coat-of-arms within mantling, with detachable collars and liners, each marked on base, collar and liner

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Lonsdale impaling Heywood for the Rev. Henry Gylby Lonsdale (1791-1851), Vicar of Lichfield, and his wife Anna Maria, daughter of John Pemberth Heywood, whom he married on August 5, 1824.

William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844) also commissioned a pair of wine coolers and stands in this model from Benjamin Smith, in 1807, which were sold at the Lonsdale sale, Christie's, London, February 19, 1947, lot 143.
