Lot Essay

The crest is that of Hood for Sir Alexander Hood K.B. (1726-1814) who was installed as a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1788. He was created Baron Bridport in 1794 and Viscount Bridport of Cricket St. Thomas in 1796. He was a great naval commander and the brother of the celebrated Admiral Samuel Hood, Viscount Hood (1724-1816). A pair of meat dishes and three matching smaller meat dishes from the same service, by Thomas Heming, dating to 1770, sold at Christie's, London, July 15, 1998, lot 218.
