Lot Essay

Christopher Easton (or Eston) gained his freedom in 1583 and is known for his production of church plate and as a prolific spoon maker. Some of Easton's work is also stamped with a scallop mark, but the reason for this is unknown. The inscribed letter V is an example of the informal date letter code used by Easton (see Timothy Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and their Makers 1550-1750, 1992, p. 85).
