A FINE AND RARE SOAPSTONE QUATREFOIL BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The cover is finely carved in relief with a butterfly detailed with gilt patterns on its wings, in flight amidst sprays of chrysanthemum and peony growing from rockwork, all against a diaper ground of wave designs and framed by a beaded border, the sides with key-fret between bands of classic scrolls, the interior of the box and cover delicately incised and gilt with a lotus flower borne on meandering stems
