A VERY RARE WHITE MARBLE CUP STAND
TANG DYNASTY (618-906)

Crisply carved with a central lotus pod platform encircled by a thin band of raised stamens in relief above a band of everted lotus lappets each containing cloud scrolls, the flat rim with further floral and cloud motifs, the splayed foot with floral embellishments in relief, the stone of mottled warm tone with brown patination (old chips to foot)

This piece appears to be unique, although it compares well to related cup stands in silver and gold of the Tang dynasty.

Compare with several other Tang dynasty white marble pieces excavated from a tomb in Xingyuan village, Yanshi, Henan province, including a quatrefoil footed cup, a shallow quatrefoil dish and a quatrefoil box, illustrated in Kaogu, 1984, no. 10, pls. 8:2 and 7:6, the line drawings are on p. 911, figs. 9:1 and 6 and p. 912, fig. 10:4.
