Lot Essay

This pair of miniature vases belongs to a group of pieces decorated in imitation of cloisonné enamel. Characteristics of the enamelled metalware such as: the gilt-wire outlines, the ubiquitous turquoise ground and the dense stylised scrolling decoration, are transferred with great exactitude onto porcelain.

Compare other larger famille rose vases simulating cloisonné enamel, one from the Robert Chang Collection, sold in these Rooms, 2 November 1999, lot 505; and another in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Treasures of the Palace Museum-Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 119.
