Lot Essay

The design of the carpet offered here is based on 16th Century Spanish carpets possibly woven in the city of Cuenca. For a similar example from the 16th century please see Knel, Ernst, Catalogue of Spanish Rugs, The Textile Museum, Washington D. C., 1953. A very similar carpet from the same period as our example was offered in these rooms in the Galerie Yves Mikaeloff sale, 21 May 1997, lot 394.
