Lot Essay

These putto-candelabra are after the celebrated model by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, first shown in the Chandeliers de sculpture en argent of 1728 and subsequently depicted in three engravings published in his Oeuvre (date unknown). A pair of Louis XV ormolu and silver candlesticks of this model, stamped with the C couronné poinçon, is discussed at length in P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture III, London, 1996, 235 (F78-9), pp.1204-09.
