Lot Essay

This chest is fitted with a writing slide, rather than the traditional brushing slide. This ingenious design is quite rare and demonstrates the same principle as the bachelor's chest, those of a discreet, multipurpose piece of furniture. A similarly fitted chest was sold from The Parry Collection, Christie's London, 24 April 1997, lot 235. Another with three small frieze drawers below a hinged top was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 19 February 1993, lot 84.
