Lot Essay

Thomas Chippendale featured the bombé form in his Director patterns and a similarly shaped 'Tea Chest' design features in plate CLIX in the 1763 edition. Dolphins that form the handles on this caddy also figure in Chippendale's patterns in the 'modern' or French rocaille taste. A similar rococo-mounted caddy is illustrated in G. Wills, English Furniture 1760-1900, New York, 1971, p.30, fig.24.
