The reeded embossed frame corresponds to documented seat furniture supplied by the famous Edinburgh firm of William Trotter (d.1834) of Princes Street Paxton House in 1824 (see F. Bamford, ed., 'Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers', Furniture History, 1983, pl.51).
It also relates to a sofa design dated 16 December 1806 in Gillow's Estimate Sketch Book (Gillow MSS in Westminster Library no.1807). The design was executed for a pair of Grecian sofas with flute-enriched frame supplied to John Lloyd Wynne, Esq. (d.1862) for Coed Coch, Denbighshire (later sold by a descendant of John Lloyd Wynne, Christie's London, 18 April 1996, lot 229). A similar sofa was sold anonymously, Christie's London, 16 September 1999, lot 264 (£5,750).
